Teaching Tip: Asking, “Does everybody understand?” rarely lets you know if students completely understand safety instructions. Instead, ask questions that can be answered by a thumbs-up or by a raised hand if they think that a demonstration is correct. Also, use peer-checking methods.

Teaching Tips: 1. Offer a variety of objects during throwing practice, so that students understand how varying weight and diameter affects throwing distance and speed. 2. When children are learning to throw, stress distance and velocity. Throwing for accuracy hampers development of a mature throwing form. Tell students to throw as hard and far as possible. 3. Avoid practicing throwing and catching at the same time. Many children's throws will be inaccurate and hard for a partner to catch. Have them practice throwing against a wall (velocity) or on a large field (distance). 4. Use carpet squares or circles drawn on the floor to teach children proper foot movement (stepping forward and off the square or out of the circle). 5. Beanbags and yarn balls are excellent for developing throwing velocity because they do not bounce.

Teaching Tip: Don't say it once! Say it over and over! Physical educators often feel marginalized because their subject matter isn't appreciated. Appreciating an area outside academics is difficult for those who don't know much about it. You are responsible for telling teachers and administrators all the benefits they receive by having a quality physical education program. Although you may be reluctant to “blow your own horn,” how else will others learn about your program? Tell your staff on a regular basis about the benefits of quality physical education. Public relations is everything!
