Enhancing effectiveness for virtual team collaboration

This is an excerpt from Organizational Behavior in Sport Management-2nd Edition by Eric MacIntosh & Laura Burton.

Many sectors of the sport industry are now supporting more virtual or hybrid work teams. There are strategies available to enhance the effectiveness of virtual team collaboration that employers and employees can consider. One step virtual teams should take is first to clarify the tasks that need to be accomplished by team members and the process that will be used to accomplish the tasks. This basically means who is doing what and when. It is also helpful to create a virtual “watercooler” that allows team members to check in with each other and helps foster social cohesion. Virtual teams also need to clarify and track team commitments to be sure all team members are engaged and productive. An important way to be sure all team members are engaged and productive is to foster shared leadership. Team members can be assigned to be mentors to other team members, can be assigned specific responsibilities for special projects, and can coach other team members based on their areas of expertise (Watkins, cited in Saunders, 2021).
