The impact of COVID-19 on physical activity

This is an excerpt from Social Issues in Sport 4th Edition With HKPropel Access by Ronald B. Woods & B. Nalani Butler.

Activity Time-Out: COVID-19

COVID-19 had an impact on every corner of the world. The global pandemic affected physical activity for people who participate in some form of sport or recreation on a daily or weekly basis. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adults ages 18 to 64 do at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity throughout the week or 75 minutes of intense physical activity throughout the week (World Health Organization 2020). Because gyms were closed and group fitness and sport activities had social distancing requirements, it was difficult for children and adults to engage in physical activity on a regular basis.

Think about how you spent this time. What activities did you engage in for physical and mental well-being, and how often did you participate?

What are some practical recommendations for how to stay active at home? For children? Teenagers? Adults? Older adults? Think about access and ability when answering this question and how one can engage in an activity at an appropriate social distance.
