Live wrestling match injury time-out simulation

This is an excerpt from Clinical Simulations for the Athletic Trainer epub by Joshua Larson,Hannah Stedge.

Simulation Situation

It is 11:00 a.m. on the third day of the wrestling championships. Your patient just rolled their nondominant ankle, and a 90-second time-out has been called. You will need to evaluate the patient within 90 seconds and determine whether the patient should forfeit the match. A second 90-second time-out can be requested to determine the patient’s readiness, or an additional 4-minute time-out may be requested to prepare the patient to return to competition.

Setting

Wrestling sideline at a wrestling championship event in Madison, WI

HCP Prebrief

Today’s simulation will resemble a live wrestling match injury time-out where you have limited time to evaluate and make an RTP decision with your patient. Here are the details for the presenting scenario.

It is the third period of the match, and the score is 10 to 7 with your patient in the lead. This is the high school wrestling semifinal round. If your patient wins, they will proceed to the final to compete as the top wrestler in the country.

When you make your RTP decision, be specific about why you have chosen to hold the patient out or why they can safely return.

SAFETY: If any person says “Time-out; time-out,” please stop actions immediately and as safely as possible. Unless you can see that the SP needs assistance, you should immediately leave the area and find a proctor.

If you have any questions, please speak to your instructor.
