Considerations for using AI in sport facility management
This is an excerpt from Managing Sport Facilities 5th Edition With HKPropel Access by Gil B. Fried & Matthew Kastel.
It’s one thing to talk about AI, but trying it out is the best way to begin to see potential applications (and potential problems). There are many apps on sites such as Poe, with different applications for image, voice, or text generation. Some of these apps can help an executive get organized, process emails, process routine tasks, help in the HR process, and perform many other tasks.
The key is having the right dataset within the system from which the AI platform can pull and process information. That is where the training comes into play. Another key is writing the right prompt or request. Sites such as ChatGPT or Gemini often make mistakes, and some have information that others might not have. Thus, even when searching for examples to use in this text, the authors used the same prompts in multiple sites, and each returned different answers. Many of the answers were wrong or did not have legitimate citations or references.
The following tips are intended to help AI users navigate searches more effectively:
- Tell the chatbot it is an expert in a given field. For example, ask AI to “act like architect Frank Lloyd Wright when designing a new sport venue.”
- Encourage the chatbot to do better. Tell AI to try and try again until you get the answer you like. Sometimes tweaking the request just a little bit can produce a better response.
- Role play. “I’m a fan going to a concert; based on your knowledge, what is the safest area to watch the concert from?”
- Be somewhat sensitive. When submitting a prompt, don’t be mad or rude, and don’t be overly polite. Be specific, and throw in a “please” or “thank you” for good measure.
- Be methodical. Tell ChatGPT to take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step. Thus, one could tell AI, “I want to develop the most appropriate cleaning schedule for cleaning 60 bathroom stalls after a major football game in the most methodical process possible to save time, money, and supplies. Make sure you provide a complete step-by-step approach for how the stalls should be cleaned, the average time that should be required to complete the tasks, what supplies are needed, and how much of each supply should be used.”
