Review of Principles and Methods of Adapted Physical Education 13th Edition

The following review of Principles and Methods of Adapted Physical Education 13th Edition, was published in PALAESTRA; Vol. 40, No. 1, 2026.

By Susan J. Grosse

The true test of a publication is its survival over time, and this book clearly has stood that test well. Content is broad based and comprehensive, providing a sound foundation of information for both pre-professionals as well as professionals in the field of physical education for individuals with disabilities.

Updates in this edition include information on culturally responsive teaching strategies to help educators build learning environments where all students feel a sense of belonging. Social-emotional learning and trauma-sensitive teaching are detailed. Technology use in adapted physical education to assist in planning, teaching, and assessment is presented. Positive behavioral interventions and supports are detailed.

Presentation features include summary lists, figures, photos, and tables. Theory is clearly written and well exemplified in numerous practical examples and hands-on descriptions. Medical aspects of disabilities included are accurate and easy to comprehend. Concern for safety of participants is evident throughout. Each of the 18 chapters are referenced in detail and a full index is included.

While this publication is intended as a textbook, it is, in reality an excellent resource for anyone working in adapted physical activity for individuals with disabilities. It is up to date in content and organized for easy access to relevant information, making it also an excellent library resource to return to again and again.

Additional resources for adopting instructors are available online, as is HKPropel access.
