Ebook With Online Resource

Prepare students for athletic training careers with realistic simulations.

Simulations are an effective way for students to practice navigating patient encounters as health care providers. Clinical Simulations for the Athletic Trainer Ebook With HKPropel Access is a one-of-a-kind resource for students to learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be a successful clinician. The text gives instructors a resource to satisfy the CAATE requirements for clinical education and to offer students an objective structured clinical experience.

With 32 simulations provided, students will have the chance to work through a variety of realistic situations in a safe, controlled environment. For each simulation, students are provided with learning materials to prepare them prior to being evaluated, so they will be tested on what they know instead of what they don’t. Topics within simulations include these:

  • Ethics
  • Administration and management
  • Acute and emergency situations
  • Concussion care
  • Social determinants of health
  • Evaluation and care for upper and lower extremities

Instructors are provided with a sample schedule, a list of needed equipment or moulage, instructions for all potential participants, grading rubrics, and assignable quizzes. Each simulation includes educational materials and activities to prepare students for success during their interaction. A simulation finder allows the instructor to sort by topic, body region or system, time to complete simulations, and CAATE standards in order to find the best simulation for the instructor’s objectives.

For students, presimulation activities give students a chance to read, research, and work through questions related to the upcoming simulation. Postsimulation activities often incorporate a specific reflection that is intended to prime students for a group debriefing discussion. The activities are listed within the ebook and are also included online as downloadable files that can be completed and submitted.

To test the student’s foundational knowledge, each simulation comes with assignable quizzes. These quizzes reinforce the clinical, anatomical, and pathological knowledge necessary to perform well as an athletic trainer.

Prepare students for their careers with safe, informative simulations designed around the complexities of athletic training. Each simulation in Clinical Simulations for the Athletic Trainer will challenge, encourage, and foster confidence in students as they prepare to encounter real scenarios as clinicians.

Joshua M. Larson, MA, NRP, is the simulation manager for the athletic training program at the University of Utah. He creates and manages simulations for the university’s department of physical therapy and athletic training and is an associate instructor, teaching content related to emergency response. He is also a practicing paramedic. Larson’s research focuses on how patient outcomes relate to their prehospital care.

Hannah L. Stedge, PhD, LAT, ATC, is an assistant professor in the department of athletic training and occupational therapy at Weber State University, where she serves as director of the bachelor’s degree program in rehabilitation sciences and an assistant professor in the master’s degree program in athletic training. She facilitates the creation and implementation of simulations in the graduate athletic training curriculum.
