  • Train Smarter, Not Longer: The Minimum Effective Dose for Muscular Development ebook
  • Online continuing education exam

It may sound too good to be true, but your clients can see results with less time in the gym. Train Smarter, Not Longer: The Minimum Effective Dose for Muscular Development explores how you can apply the minimum effective dose (MED) principle to resistance training, so you can be sure that clients are not spending unnecessary time in the gym.

The theory of MED in resistance training is a valuable tool for any experience level. Find the sweet spot and create a routine that pushes clients hard enough to see real results, without spending countless hours in the gym. Sample programs and practical examples included in the ebook help to determine the best approach for different lifestyles and goals.

The science of resistance training can seem overwhelming, but this ebook is designed to translate the important concepts into easily digestible chapters. The fundamentals of resistance training, nutrition, and recovery are all included, so wherever clients are at in their training journey, there’s something to be learned about how to help maximize their routine. Not only is the information designed to be easy to read, but it’s also backed by years of scientific research.

Train Smarter, Not Longer is a tool for anyone who wants to deliver the benefits of resistance training without requiring their clients to commit to endless hours in the gym. Figure out the minimum effective dose (MED) of exercise that will get the gains your clients are looking for.

After reading the ebook, certified professionals can take the companion CE exam to earn continuing education credits.

Learning Objectives

  • Define minimum effective training dose and explain why this approach is efficient and sustainable for improving strength and muscle growth.
  • Explain how the minimum effective dose approach prioritizes accessibility, consistency, and meaningful progress over “perfect” or fully optimal training.
  • Apply the principles of specificity and progressive overload to align resistance training with individual goals.
  • Identify the key training variables that matter most, including exercise selection and training volume, effort, and frequency.
  • Describe how nutrition supports muscle growth, recovery, and training progress through adequate protein, calories, and mostly whole foods.
  • Explain the role of sleep and stress management in improving recovery, strength, muscle growth, and overall health.
  • Apply minimum effective dose principles to strength training by emphasizing heavy loads, moderate volume, and consistent practice of specific movements.
  • Manage fatigue in strength training by using appropriate repetitions in reserve, training frequency, rest periods, and simple progression strategies.
  • Define muscle hypertrophy, emphasizing how it is driven by mechanical tension.
  • Apply proven hypertrophy training principles, including sufficient effort, appropriate volume, and progressive overload.
  • Design an individualized minimum effective dose training program that balances efficiency, sustainability, and results.
  • Assess strength and hypertrophy progress using performance tracking, heavy singles, one-repetition maximum testing, visual changes, and circumference measurements.
  • Adapt minimum effective dose training strategies to maintain progress during busy, stressful, or unpredictable periods of life.
  • Use the minimum effective dose framework as a long-term strategy for building strength, gaining muscle, improving fitness, and sustaining progress over time.

Patroklos “Pak” Androulakis-Korakakis, PhD, received his doctorate in sport science at Solent University (United Kingdom) on the topic of the minimum effective training dose for powerlifters. His research focuses on muscle strength, hypertrophy, and strength sport performance and is frequently published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Sports Medicine, PeerJ, Frontiers). His work has also been featured in outlets such as TheNew York Times and The Washington Post. An active coach, Pak has worked with hundreds of clients, including physique athletes, powerlifters, and recreationally active individuals looking to become stronger and improve their body composition. He often presents at academic conferences and private seminars across the world, including seminars for the strength and conditioning coaches from multiple sports of Team GB (the Olympic team of Great Britain). Lastly, but arguably most importantly, Pak has been lifting since the age of 15 and will continue to do so until the bitter end.
