Everything you need to know about conjugate training.

Conjugate training is a resistance training system that develops multiple physical qualities through planned variation in exercises, loading, volume, intensity, and training methods. With Conjugate Training: Methodology and Application, you will explore the history, science, and practical application of this method with research-supported guidance on implementation.

Conjugate training helps you progress from your current state of strength and fitness; improve physical capacity; and keep overuse, training mileage, and burnout to a minimum. Within the book, you will find the following:

  • Sample training programs with 65 workouts
  • Detailed directions for how to perform the three big liftswith photos
  • Applications for sports; military, firefighter, and police duty; powerlifting; fitness; health; and longevity
  • Over 80 sidebars containing anecdotes or coaching recommendations from the author
  • Over 900 references

As one of the most complete resources on conjugate training, this book is a must-have for learning how to use conjugate training with athletes or clients or within your own training.

Learn the physiological components, adaptations, programmatic guidelines, and application of conjugate training, then try it out with one of the provided sample programs. Conjugate Training: Methodology and Application helps you train more intelligently, avoid stagnation, and continue progressing over time.

Audience

Readers with a more advanced understanding of training who want to maximize their strength for any reason (e.g., sports; military, firefighter, or police duty; powerlifting; fitness; health; longevity) and want to not only learn how to program their resistance training but also understand the foundational concepts of conjugate training.

About the Author

Matt Wenning has built a decades-long career combining extraordinary strength achievements with scientific training and longevity. He holds multiple world records in powerlifting, including a 1,197-pound squat, a 611-pound bench press, and an 865.5-pound raw squat. Competing from 1992 to 2018, he is among the few lifters to hold all-time world records for both raw and equipped lifting. Remarkably, he ranked among the world’s top five lifters in various weight classes for more than 15 years while avoiding major injury.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a master’s degree in sport biomechanics at Ball State University. There, he studied under Dr. William Kraemer and Dr. Robert Newton and encountered the work of Dr. Vladimir Zatsiorsky. From 1999 to 2007, he trained alongside legendary powerlifting coach Louie Simmons at Westside Barbell. These experiences shaped his expertise in conjugate training and evidence-based programming. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in kinesiology at Concordia University–St. Paul.

Matt has applied his methods beyond competitive powerlifting, working with U.S. Army Rangers, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 4th Infantry Division, and the U.S. Border Patrol, while advising the Pentagon on tactical testing and wellness. He has also trained more than 300 firefighters, documenting injury-reduction outcomes through insurance and government data.

An internationally recognized speaker, Matt has presented at the conferences of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) and delivered seminars in Australia, Canada, England, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. His career reflects a rare combination of personal resilience, world-class performance, scientific curiosity, and commitment to helping others become stronger, healthier, and more resilient.

“Matt is one of the few who get speed, strength, power, and conditioning right, and you will find that knowledge in Conjugate Training. He’s gifted and talented, but his consistency in living and delivering truth far outshines his gifts and talents.”

—Heath Evans, Former NFL Player for the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints

“Matt Wenning doesn’t just understand conjugate training; he has lived it, coached it, tested it, and evolved it. Conjugate Training: Methodology and Application cuts through the BS and gives you the principles, methods, and reasoning needed to actually make conjugate work. If you want to understand the system instead of just copying exercises, read this book.”

—Dave Tate, CEO of EliteFTS

“Matt Wenning’s rare combination of advanced education, multiple world records, and decades under the bar—including his continued commitment to lifting at a high level—gives him a perspective few can match. When it comes to understanding training rotation and building strength that lasts, Matt is the guy you want to learn from.”

—Joe DeFranco, Founder of DeFranco’s Training Systems LLC
