Joseph P. Winnick, EdD, passed away in 2019. He was a distinguished service professor in the department of kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education at State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Temple University. For more than 50 years, Winnick taught undergraduate and graduate courses in adapted physical education at SUNY Brockport in addition to developing and coordinating programs for adapted physical education. He also directed nationwide research projects related to the physical fitness of people with disabilities and was involved in the publication of the Brockport Physical Fitness Test and support materials.
Winnick had been president and a board member of the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID) and a consultant for the U.S. Department of Education since 1969. He also served as a reviewer for several professional journals, had more than 70 publications to his credit, and was a member of SHAPE America. His previous editions of Adapted Physical Education and Sport have been translated into five languages.
David L. Porretta, PhD, is an emeritus professor of Ohio State University and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in adapted physical education for over 35 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University, his master’s degree from Ithaca College, and his doctorate from Temple University. Porretta has numerous major scholarly publications and a continuous record of external funding. He has served as editor of, and on the editorial board of, Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly (APAQ). He is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity, and the Research Council of SHAPE America. Porretta is the recipient of the Julian U. Stein Lifetime Achievement Award from SHAPE America as well as the recipient of the Hollis Fait Scholarly Contribution Award, the G. Lawrence Rarick Research Award, and the Claudine Sherrill Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID). He also served as NCPEID’s president. Porretta has been a contributing author to all previous editions of Adapted Physical Education and Sport. He enjoys golf, traveling, and attending Ohio State sporting events.
Lauren J. Lieberman, PhD, is a distinguished service professor in the kinesiology department at State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport. She started her career teaching in the Deafblind program at the Perkins School for the Blind. She is co-director of the Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments (IMSVI) and the founder and director of Camp Abilities—an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Camp Abilities have been replicated in 20 states and 10 countries.
Lieberman has published over 275 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as 27 books. She was awarded a Global Fulbright Scholarship to promote Camp Abilities worldwide in 2019. She won the Lifetime Achievement Award from both the National Consortium of Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID) and SHAPE America. She was also recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Division 19 of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind. She won the Physical Literacy Champion Award from the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy in 2026.

Instructor guide. Contains a sample course outline, a sample syllabus, ideas for an introductory course in adapted physical education, and class projects. Each chapter also includes aids for instructors such as chapter objectives, ideas for learning activities, key terms with definitions, and suggested video clips to describe the content and functionality of the instructor ancillaries.
Test package. Contains 30 to 40 questions in true-false, fill-in-the-blank, essay and short-answer, and multiple-choice formats for each chapter. The files may be downloaded for integration with a learning management system or printed for use as paper-based tests.
