Accurately assessing on- or off-field injuries and illnesses quickly is a vital skill for athletic trainers and other health care professionals who need to begin proper treatment as soon as possible. Acute and Emergency Care in Sports Medicine, Second Edition, helps future health care professionals use critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making to triage injuries based on severity, make immediate life- or limb-saving decisions, and provide immediate emergency care while working on the sidelines.

The book’s comprehensive coverage draws from position statements and consensus statements from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and other professional organizations. It adheres to and incorporates guidelines from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). More than 300 full-color photos and illustrationsĀ detail anatomy, various conditions, spine boarding, equipment removal, and more.

Nine new videos demonstrate dislocation reductions using proper patient positioning and correct HCP hand placement to achieve best results. Additional resources—such as a table of common medical abbreviations; a sample AMA form; and links to the SCAT-6 form, VOMs tool, and several mental health resources—can be easily accessed with QR codes throughout the book.

The second edition includes three new chapters to present a broader scope of knowledge and reflect the evolving standards of the medical field. Chapter 16 focuses on mental health emergencies, an increasingly crucial subject necessary for every athletic trainer to understand. Chapter 5, Bleeding and Vascular Disorders, and chapter 6, Shock and Immunologic Emergencies, feature a wide range of disorders, treatment options, and expanded content to achieve a comprehensive picture of how to treat these disorders.

In addition, the book expands its verbiage and content to make it appropriate not just for athletic trainers but for other health care professionals as well. The text has been revised and reorganized to enhance the accessibility for students. Throughout the text, learning aids provide actionable and essential information:

  • Clinical Tip boxesĀ offer tips from the authors, who have over 80 years of combined experience as certified athletic trainers.
  • Red Flag sidebars indicate ways to rapidly identify potential life-threatening conditions.
  • Clinical Skills boxes feature step-by-step guides on how to complete a specific skill.
  • Decision-making algorithms and decision trees allow the student to understand the steps in the decision-making process, making difficult situations easier to overcome.
  • Instructors are supplied with case studies featuring practical scenarios that facilitate critical thinking and decision-making skills.

When an athlete is injured, time is of the essence. Acute and Emergency Care in Sports Medicine, Second Edition, is an invaluable resource for training and preparing the initial responders to recognize critical situations and treat the acutely injured or ill patient.
