Katie Walsh Flanagan, EdD, LAT, ATC, is an adjunct professor at Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She was a professor and director of the sports medicine and athletic training program at East Carolina University, where she worked for more than 30 years, and is an athletic trainer certified by the Board of Certification (BOC). Walsh Flanagan previously worked as a lecturer and assistant athletic trainer at California State University at Fresno, and as the head athletic trainer for the Chicago Power, a men’s professional soccer team. She has also assisted as an athletic trainer for various sports in international competitions, including the 1987 Pan American Games and the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

In 2012, Walsh Flanagan was elected to the North Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association (NCATA) Hall of Fame. NCATA named her the College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2000 and 2006. She received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2010 and the NATA Service Award in 2006. In 2017, she was named a NATA board member as the director of district three. In 2025, Walsh Flanagan was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame. She was the lead author for Medical Conditions in the Physically Active, Fourth Edition, and was author of a medical terminology textbook for health care professionals.

Patrick Sexton, EdD, LAT, ATC, is a professor emeritus (athletic training and sports medicine) of Minnesota State University (MSU) in Mankato, Minnesota. He previously served as the head athletic trainer and the director of athletic training education at MSU and at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. He has served as a member of the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training and as the vice-chair of the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. He served as athletic training director of the Board of Certification (BOC) and president of the BOC board of directors.

Sexton has been a frequent speaker at state, district, and national meetings and has authored or coauthored journal articles in Athletic Training Education Journal, Journal of Athletic Training, and Athletic Therapy Today. Sexton has received the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award and the Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator Award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). In 2012 he was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame, and in 2016 he was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame.
