    Online Course

Primary audience: Coaching Advanced Baseball is designed for experienced coaches who are coaching a Babe Ruth League team for the first time and need to meet the Babe Ruth league education and certification requirement.

Additional audiences: The course is also for Babe Ruth League coaches who completed the Coaching Youth Baseball course to achieve certification and are now looking to continue their education and further their development as baseball coaches.

First-time coaches who coach younger athletes are encouraged to take the Coaching Youth Baseball course rather than the advanced-level course to meet the Babe Ruth League education and certification requirement. As they evolve as coaches, they are encouraged to continue their education by taking this advanced course.

Coaching Advanced Baseball offers experienced baseball coaches an unparalleled online educational experience aimed at improving players’ performance and in-game decision making. Featuring a video introduction from MLB Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and led by course mentor Bill Ripken, the course features 11 units guiding coaches through the nuances of technical and tactical skill demonstration, evaluation, and correction; traditional and games approach methods of coaching; and season and practice planning. After completing the course, you’ll be able to do the following:

    • Explain the relationship and difference between technical and tactical skills and describe the traditional and games approaches to baseball practice (unit 1).
    • Evaluate technical and tactical baseball skills in your players and make use of your evaluation results (unit 2).
    • Teach, critique, and correct essential technical skills (units 3 and 4).
    • Teach, critique, and correct essential tactical skills (units 5 and 6).
    • Provide for players’ safety during practices and games (unit 7).
    • Prepare effective season plans and individual practice plans (units 8 and 9).
    • Prepare for game days, coach games, and work with your team (units 10 and 11).

The course is highly interactive, incorporating nearly 100 video clips, sound bites, on-screen reading, Flash activities, end-of-unit quizzes, and a 40-question test that you will find engaging and entertaining. Two units of the course depict a virtual baseball game in which participants apply what they’ve learned by making tactical decisions affecting the outcome of the game.

A Coaching Aids feature includes sample practice plans, first aid checklists, and drill sheets introduced throughout the course, all of which can be printed or saved for future reference.

The course takes approximately 8 hours to complete and satisfies the Babe Ruth League coaching education and certification requirements. With this course, you’ll be prepared for your first practice, and you can refer to it for up to a year.
