Coaching Youth Football-3rd Edition: The AYF Way
Online CourseLearn fundamental coaching concepts and responsibilities and come away with the most important coaching points for the major skills and tactics of youth football.
Due to today’s safety concerns for our AYF youth, all AYF football coaches are strongly advised to complete the online course. All tournament team coaches should be aware that a course completion certificate will be one of the items on the registration checklist for the AYF National Championships.
Developed by Human Kinetics Coach Education in conjunction with renowned college and professional football coach and AYF president Joe Galat, this interactive online course will prepare you for your season and provide the best possible experience for your athletes. The course is supplemented by the sixth edition of the Coaching Youth Football book, which is delivered in ebook format from within the course. As you progress through the online course, you’ll be prompted to read chapters from the ebook to complete course units.
The course includes many interactive exercises that apply and enrich concepts from the book. It also includes a handy Coaches’ Clipboard, which coaches have access to for up to a year, that features electronic forms (supplied as PDF files), checklists, drill sheets, and sample plans for practice sessions and game-day coaching.
Guided by a mentor coach, coaches face learning challenges in the following units:
Unit 1: Stepping Into Coaching
Unit 2: Communicating as a Coach
Unit 3: Understanding Rules and Equipment
Unit 4: Providing for Players’ Safety
Unit 5: Making Practices Fun and Practical
Unit 6: Teaching and Shaping Skills
Unit 7: Coaching Offensive Techniques
Unit 8: Coaching Offensive Tactics
Unit 9: Coaching Defensive Techniques
Unit 10: Coaching Defensive Tactics
Unit 11: Coaching Special Teams Techniques and Tactics

Unit 13: Developing Season and Practice Plans
Unit 14: Safer Environment Training
As we continue to learn more about the cumulative effects of head injuries, it’s of utmost importance that we properly prepare, protect, and instruct our youth participants to minimize their risk of injury. We’ve turned to the leading authority on concussions—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—for course content dedicated to the prevention, management, and treatment of concussions. As part of the final unit of the course, you’ll take the CDC’s Head’s Up: Concussion in Youth Sports course, used as a training resource for thousands of sport organizations across the country.
Another area in which our kids need absolute protection is against sexual abuse. The final course unit includes information from the AYF risk management policy, encompassing criminal background checks, warning signs of molestation, policies for addressing abuse, required procedures to follow in the event of an allegation, and advice regarding communication about these topics.
After completing the course activities, you’ll take the 30-question online test, which covers material from the book and the online course.
An online resource for American Youth Football coaches of players ages 8 to 14. The course is required of all football coaches new to AYF this year.
